Every few years or so we are all presented with a new version of Microsoft’s hugely popular office suite of applications. The last time this happened was in 2007 and please correct me if I’m wrong, not all that many people/companies took kindly to it with the majority choosing to stick with the perfectly capable 2003 version.
Microsoft Office 2010 has now hit the Release Candidate (RC) stage after a period of beta testing which started in November and now the beta testers will be getting to play around with this RC. As of last month, there were a total 2 million downloads of the beta release. This is no doubt a major milestone on the way to releasing the final version which will be offered in both 32 and 64 bit editions for the first time ever.
The Office 2010 release has been made available to members in the technology adoption program. The new office suite is said to maintain the ribbon interface introduced in Office 2007, as well as the usual XML file formats.
One of the major additions to Office 2010 is the introduction of Office Web Apps which are browser-based versions of the usual Office programs (similarly to Google Docs). This is a fantastic addition which means you can edit your documents anywhere easily, without the need for carrying removable media such as pen drives etc.
It’s still a while away from the final release, but with the progression to Office 2010 RC status is a good sign that the Office 2010 release date of June 2010 will be achieved! If you want to know more about what might be in the final release then take a look at our Office 2010 Preview Guide.
Clearly it won’t be too long until it’s launched, it’ll be interesting to see how the public take to the new software upon release as I’m sure the new decade will bring about a time where companies look to upgrade their software across the board. Many have already taken to implementing Windows 7 on their office networks, so perhaps Office 2010 is about to spring up around the world soon, although it probably won’t seem quite as good as the Microsoft Office 2010 movie trailer!
